The Department of Communications (DoT) is planning to issue show cause notice to the leading telecommunication companies like Airtel, Vodafone and Idea-asking them to scarp 3G roaming pacts.

According to an internal note reviewed by media, the telecom minister Kapil Sibal has said that the government is planning action against these operators after it received the opinion of Additional Solicitor General.

The Additional Solicitor General is believed to be of the view that the government is well within its right to ask to money  to these companies earned from these pacts which government has termed illegal.

Vodafone, Idea and Airtel had approached the sectoral tribunal TDSAT after  the government had scrapped 3G pacts last year. The tribunal had given a split verdict on this.

In a related development Sibal in response to a query raised by JD (U) parliamentarian M. Hazari has said that such 3G roaming pacts are illegal.
