Government – New mobile licence norms to finalise by friday

The issues related to the auction will be decided first and those outside its ambit can be handled later - Telecom Commission.

Telecom Commission, the highest policy-making body in the telecom department may give final shape to the guidelines for licences to be issued to new operators by September 7th,  2012. The process for the auction of airwaves will start in the new extended deadline of November.

The Telecom Commission Chairman and Secretary, R Chandrasekhar addressed the media that by Friday the final recommendation of telecom commission in respect of Unified Licences in all aspect that will be relevant for the purpose of the auction will be available.

He futher said, that the issues related to the auction will be decided first and those outside its ambit can be handled later. He was referring to the issue related to migration of licences of existing players and bringing telecom tower companies under the licensing regime.

Chandrashekhar said “One of the views that was taken in today’s meeting was that out of large set of recommendations, we should prioritise and focus on those aspects which require immediate decision in the context of the auctions.”

It was proposed by Telecom Regulatory Authority, TRAI that telecom tower companies be brought under the licensing regime. It estimated that bringing IP-I under the licensing regime will fetch the government revenues of around Rs 1,900 crore per year.
