Indian Government to give free phones to 6million rural households with 200 free minutes

The telecom industry is expanding like never before as the Government is finalizing a Rs 7000 crore scheme. Sources say  the scheme is to give one Mobile phone to every family  living  below the poverty line (BPL Family), with an additional bonanza of free 200 minutes of local calls worth Rs 100.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is expected to make an announcement on 15th of August on the occasion of Independence day. This special scheme will be called “Har ‘Hath Mein Phone” The scheme will help 28 million poor Indians across the country to have an access to free connectivity.

Sources claims “Har Hath Mein Phone” scheme will be funded by two parties. Department of Telecommunication’s Universal Service Obligation(USO) and rest of the cost is likely to come from the bidder who gets the right to provide mobile phone service.(Prepaid SIM Card). The main intention of USO fund is to provide access to phone services to people in rural and remote areas at affordable prices.

Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) is directly involved with the Planning Commission, PM’s advisor Sam Pitroda and Telecom Ministry to finalize the scheme by 10th August. The Planning Commission and DoT have been asked to submit a final pragmatic and functional solution for this scheme, so that the announcement can be made on 65th Independence day.
