Japan smartphone and tablet market grows by 25.6 percent – Report

A report by IDC on Japan Quarterly Mobile Device Tracker, revealed that, Japan mobile device market which includes PCs, smartphones, tablets, mobile cards and personal routers, in the third quarter of 2012 has shown signs of growth by 25.6 percent. 13.56 million units has been shipped in third quarter, if compared to 10.8 million units shipped during the same period in 2011.

Demand for both smartphones and media tablets are expected to reach 14.95 million units in fourth quarter, representing a growth of 20.9 percent year on year.  This time Fujitsu has acquired the position of numero uno by capturing the largest market share and has shipped 2.74 million smartphones and PCs domestically. Apple has climbed down to the next position though the company shipped 2.54 million units in the quarter. Apple is followed by SONY in the third position, ahead of Sharp and NEC Lenovo group.

The shipment in Japan’s smartphone market reached 7.97 million units in third quarter of 2012 for a strong year on year growth of 50.2 percent and accounting for 58.8 percent of total mobile device shipments domestically. The growth in the market is the result of replacement demand of the advanced mobile users and also new purchases by average users.

The launch of iPhone 5 in end of September, also gave a boost to the market. Moreover, Android remain dominant in the race of operating system and its market share shoot up to 74.9 percent, leaving its rival iOS far behind.

The media tablet market has witnessed a triple digit growth of 106.8 percent in third quarter of 2012 if compared to the previous year. This growth has been driven by some mobile operators who have pushed for the shipment of Long Term Evolution (LTE) based tablets to extend the market size. If we look at the domestic OS perspective then for the first time Android has won the market share of 46.4 percent and is ranked number one, since 2010. iOS was dominant in previous year in both market share and in revenue.

According to IDC, smartphones and mobile tablet market will grow constantly with a good double digit number. Furthermore, iPad mini can be the driving force to increase market demand.

In the forecast for 2014-2016, IDC predicts that Japan’s smartphone market can reach 38.06 million units in 2016, whereas media tablet market will increase to 7.8 million units in 2016 from 4.0 million units currently.
