Samsung beats Nokia in India

Samsung, the handset giant in fiscal year 2012 has acquired a market share of 31.5 percent in India dislodging Finnish giant Nokia which has accounted 27.2 percent of the market share during the same period. According to a Voice and Data survey, in terms of revenue, Samsung rose to 11,328 crore from Rs 7,891 crore in FY12 registering a growth of 43.6 percent. Nokia’s revenue on the other hand fell to Rs 9,780 crore from Rs 11,925 crore in FY12 with wa significant 18 percent drop in revenue.

Depending on its sales strategy last fiscal like EMI schemes and appointing Ingram Micro and Redington as the national distributors for their entire sales Apple “grew a mammoth 417.2 percent to post revenues of Rs 1,293 crore in FY13 compared to Rs 250 crore a year back”. Apple managed to grab 3.6 percent market share in the country.

The survey further reveals, overall, the Indian mobile handset market reported revenues of Rs 35,946 crore in FY 13 compared to Rs 31,330 crore in FY12 registering a growth of 14.7 percent. This has been attributed  mainly due to the increasing adoption of Smartphones by the Indian consumers.

The domestic handset makers though stumbled in FY12 and the first quarter of FY13, Micromax with its Canvan series smartphones has grabbed number 3 slot with a market share of 8.7 percent. Following Micromax closely at number 4 is Karbonn mobiles which a market share of 6.4 percent. Other Indian handset makers like Lava and Zen also did well.

“The rise of smaller local players like Micromax, Karbon, Lava, and Zen is a clear indication that consumers want cheaper feature rich phones. The next phase of mobile penetration in the bottom of the pyramid India will be driven by these companies”, says Ibrahim Ahmad, Group Editor of Voice&Data.

Micromax  grew by 58.6 percent. By the end of the last fiscal, the company posted revenues of Rs 3,138 crore compared to Rs 1,978 crore in FY12. With this Micromax enjoys a market share of 8.7 percent.

In FY13, Karbonn grew by 73.1 percent to register revenues of Rs 2,297 crore compared to Rs 1,327 crore in FY12. IN FY 2013 Karbonn grew by 32 percent.
