SMS based bus ticketing service introduced by MakeMyTrip

MakeMyTrip, the online travel company has come up with SMS based ticket booking services especially for entry level handset users. The platform has been developed by txtWeb, an open platform for SMS applications, launched in India in 2011. It allows anyone with a simple mobile phone to discover and consume services on the Internet via SMS and is one of the fastest platforms to make content and services available to billions.

The website offers Bus tickets for 1300+ operators over 12,000 + routes across India including the inventory for Punbus/Punjab Roadways , GSRTC, Goa and Bihar Road Transport Corp. and Himachal Pradesh Tourism Development Corp.

In order to book a bus ticket via SMS, one needs to send an SMS @mbus <From-City> <To-City> <Date-of-Travel> <No.of Passengers> to 9664896648. MakeMyTrip will respond with choices for different operators on that day route. It will also responds with a template to provide details, names of travelers, and payment. Users will have to provide IMPS transaction details to make a payment. MakeMyTrip claims that it sends an SMS along with an email on successful payment, however, it’s not clear in the process where MakeMyTrip collects one’s email address. It also claims that for some bus operators the SMS can also work as e-ticket.

We were the first Indian OTA to develop mobile travel app for the iOS which we followed with an Android app. To ensure that the non-smartphone users can also avail and experience the benefits of the mobile platform, we have developed this sms-base service for bus-ticket reservation. “

“We targeted bus ticket reservation for this platform (mobile) since the ticket value is lower and most first-time users can confidently experiment with the channel.
