Large crowds have thronged Mumbai’s Bandra-Kurla Complex and New Delhi’s Select CityWalk mall in Saket at the Apple Store for the launch of the iPhone 16 series.
Sales started early at 8AM, with people queuing up since last night. Some have come from far away, camping outside the store hoping to be the first customer to buy the latest iPhone.
Apple has made locally manufactured iPhone 16 models available at launch in India. iPhone 16 and 16 Plus buyers are picking up models branded “Assembled in India”, a first for the larger-sized Plus model. The Pro models, however, are imported for the first wave of sales with India-made units set to hit shelves later this year.
Store officials said around 400-500 people have thronged the Mumbai store while in Delhi, there have been around 200-300 people waiting outside the store since 5AM. The crowd is expected to peak around noon.
The queues had customers who had pre-booked their iPhones as well as those who showed up in the morning hoping to get their hands on the latest models.
“We have been using the iPhone since the iPhone 3. Once you start using it, it’s hard to go back to any other phone,” said Ankush Giri, a software engineer who has been buying iPhones on the first day of sale since the iPhone 6.
Manpreet Singh from Ludhiana who owns mobile phone stores himself reached Delhi on Thursday after pre-booking two units of the iPhone 16 Pro. “Pro models are in short supply there, so we came to Delhi. It’s a different feeling buying it on the first day,” he said.
The latest iPhone 16 series comes with a dedicated camera button, upgraded performance thanks to a new chipset, and improved cameras. Later next year, users will also get access to a bunch of generative AI tools, in what is being dubbed to be one of the biggest upgrade in the lineup’s history.
Apple has also launched the iPhone 16 and the 16 Plus at the same price at last year, while the Pro and Pro Max models are retailing at a lower price than last year.
The iPhone 16 and the 16 Plus starts at Rs 79,900 and Rs 89,900 respectively, while the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max starts at Rs 1,19,900 and Rs 1,44,900 in India.
