Apple released the iOS17 release candidate build yesterday and it comes with a code that reveals more details about the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max’s ability to record ProRes videos directly to the external storage, reports Macrumor.
Now, Apple has talked about the iPhone 15 Pro model’s ability to record ProRes videos at 4K 60fps which is a huge advantage over the 4k 30fps from iPhone 14 Pro and that it can record directly to an external storage.
The code reveals a couple of requirements for the entire feature. According to the report, the iPhone 15 Pro models can also shoot ProRes 2.8K at 60 fps with external storage recording.
All this comes as a part of the new USB 3.0 support Type-C ports that Apple has finally adopted and implements in its new iPhones. However, the feature is limited to the Pro models only given they are the ones that come with USB 3 standards.
Requirements for recording ProRes videos to an external storage device
According to the code, the external device can be used to record ProRest videos with the new iPhone 15 Pros when it is formatted to exFAT or APFS format. And, that’s pretty much it. There’s no information on the disc speed requirements in the code.
How it is a game-changer for content creators
This option itself is a deal-breaker for many content creators and even filmmakers out there. Due to Apple’s versatile camera setup, content creators and even professional filmmakers have been using iPhones to make movies and create content. The introduction of ProRes adding icing to the cake. However, ProRes videos are high-quality videos and they carry a lot more data over the regular videos and all this translates into relatively bigger file sizes. Which makes it hard for users to capture and then transfer them to a PC or Mac for editing.
The ability to capture them directly into an external storage device makes it easier for them to move the data around without having to rely on connecting the cable or using AirDrop or other means to transfer the footage.
This is almost like taking out the memory card from the professional camera and following the post processing workflow.
