NEW DELHI: Vodafone Idea (Vi) has rolled out a new low-cost Rs 99 prepaid plan for its users, even as rival telecom operator Bharti Airtel has discontinued its Rs 99 plan in nine states, and is instead offering a Rs 155 prepaid plan in these states, eyeing to boost ARPU.
Vodafone Idea’s Rs 99 plan provides a talk time of Rs 99 along with 200MB of 4G data, but does not include unlimited calls or free 100 SMS per day. It has a validity of 28 days.
“Catering to the affordability of consumers, Vi continues to take measures to offer the best in class mobile services at most attractive price points. We invite mobile users and non-users to join the high speed Vi network at just Rs. 99 and continue enjoying the benefits of mobile connectivity in the digital era. This will not just drive inclusivity but also enable more users to enter the digital bandwagon,” Vodafone Idea was quoted as saying in a TOI report.
The Airtel Rs 99 prepaid plan, too, provided a talk time value of Rs 99 and 200MB of mobile data with 28 days validity, which has been withdrawn in Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, HP, Rajasthan, Northeast, Karnataka, and UP-West, in addition to Haryana and Odisha, effectively increasing the base rates in these states by 57%.
Analysts at Jefferies said that despite an increase in base tariffs in Odisha and Haryana circles during the second half of November 2022, Airtel has gained subscribers and market share in both these circles which implies a limited impact of tariff hikes on the telco’s subscriber base.
“With the entire subscriber base not going through a recharge cycle by Nov-end, subscriber data for Dec-22 will offer conclusive evidence. Bharti’s recent move to raise minimum voice tariffs to Rs155 in seven other circles in Jan-23 suggests favorable subscriber movements in Dec-22 as well,” Jefferies analysts said.
