Italian ecommerce worth 80.6 billion euros in 2023

Online sales in Italy are estimated at 80.55 billion euros in 2023. This is an increase of 27.14 percent compared to a year before. On average, Italian online stores grew almost 29 percent in terms of turnover.

These data come from the 18th edition of the Ecommerce Italia report by Casaleggio Associati. In 2022, ecommerce in Italy was worth 75.9 billion euros in terms of turnover. Compared to 2021, this was an increase of 19 percent.

At the time, inflation contributed to half of that growth. According to the report, inflation in 2023 was 6.16 percent. This leaves a substantial growth in sales volumes of 20.98 percent.

Online stores increased turnover with 28.56%

At the start of the year, online store owners expected to grow 17.26 percent in 2023. The data shows that on average, their turnover increased 28.56 percent. Marketplaces showed the strongest increase in turnover (55 percent). They generated 14.5 billion euros in sales. Online sales in travel and tourism reached 21.8 billion euros, which was an increase of 42 percent compared to 2022.

While selling less items, the jewelry and watches sector still increased its turnover with 2%.

Some industries were affected by the global economic crisis. Electronics decreased 3.5 percent in sales, reaching 3.5 billion euros. At the same time, the online jewelry and watches industry decreased 4 percent in sales volume. By adjusting their product prices, the sector still increased its turnover with 2 percent to 406.7 million euros.
