Apple has released macOS Big Sur 11.6.3, Safari 15.3 for both macOS Big Sur and macOS Catalina, and Security Update 2022-001 Catalina, to users running prior versions of Macintosh operating systems.
Mac users running Monterey will instead find macOS Monterey 12.2 update available to download, which includes the same security patches and the latest Safari version, while iPhone and iPad users will find iOS 15.3 and iPadOS 15.3 with the same fixes.
Each of these updates are primarily patching security issues or bugs, including fixing the browser data leaking issue in Safari that generated some recent press.
How to Download MacOS Big Sur 11.6.3 & Safari 15.3
Don’t forget to backup to Time Machine before installing system software updates.
If you’re still running macOS Big Sur you can continue to get macOS Big Sur updates like 11.6.3, but you have to ignore the Monterey promotion and use a slightly different method of updating system software:
- Go to the Apple menu and choose “System Preferences”
- Select “Software Update”
- Ignore the macOS Monterey update option, and instead choose the small blue “More Info” text under ‘Other Updates Available
- Make sure the boxes for macOS Big Sur 11.6.3 update, and for Safari 15.3 are checked, and select to ‘Install Now’
Note: If you are still running macOS Catalina, you will find Safari 15.3 and Security Update 2022-001 Catalina available as updates instead.
Installing the updates will require the Mac to restart.
